Any fan that follows this American actor on Instagram can tell you that Jason is vocal about his love of heavy metal music. What the fans want to know is whether he has a voice of his own.

Jason Momoa has been singing along to heavy metal and ritual chants. Whether or not his capabilities extend beyond that, is still a mystery.

Read on to discover more about Jason’s music inspirations, watch him let loose on stage at Slayer’s gig, and see him perform Haka chanting at a premiere.

Musical Icons

Jason has made many posts on socials expressing his love of music. His love of heavy metal in particular can be seen in the post he made after attending Slayer’s closing show in November 2019. Jason shared on Instagram “i was living out my childhood dreams” and “i’ve trained and bleed and fought my way to where i am. listening to these legends mahalo nui for your music and endless inspiration.” He not only spent time backstage with his icons, but also managed to get in front of the audience and perform with Phil Anselmo. They opened the show with a cover of Pantera’s classic track ‘This Love’. Be sure to watch Jason go crazy headbanging on stage.

Personal life aside, heavy metal also plays a major role in Jason’s acting career. Momoa explained how he builds his on-screen characters off of metal songs. In an interview with Metal Hammer, Jason reveals that his recent role as ‘Aquaman’ is no exception. He mentions how Metallica, Black Sabbath and Tool were the three heavy metal bands that Jason used to draw inspiration for his character. In another recent on-screen performance, Momoa even went as far as practicing a screaming technique to perfect his war cry scene for the TV series ‘See’. He sought the advice and guidance from Oli Peters; a vocalist of a technical death metal band called Archspire.

Jason’s love of heavy metal has even landed him a feature in Ozzy Osborne’s music video ‘Scary Little Green Men’. You can watch Jason transform into a true metalhead with his long hair and hooded cape in this teaser clip on YouTube. In the behind the scenes video, the director Marc Klasfeld compliments Jason on his amazing embodiment of Ozzy. He states that Momoa being a big fan definitely reflects in his performance, making him the perfect choice.

Jason Sings

There are very few recorded examples of Jason singing, but from what we could find, those captured moments are enough to predict the sort of tunes that Jason would be able to ace.

If we trace all the way back to Jason’s younger years and his time playing Jason Ioane in the action drama series ‘Baywatch Hawaii’; a scene from this show introduces us to his deep bass voice.

Another snippet of a singing voice can be seen in Jason’s appearance on the Saturday Night Live comedy show. Momoa joined in singing to Parliament’s 1978 single ‘Aqua Boogie’, however, much more could be said about his impressive dance moves rather than singing voice. Judge for yourself by watching the video below.

A more recent example of Momoa singing, or rather chanting, can be seen in his performance of Haka at the Aquaman premiere. Whether this would be classed as singing or not is hard to say, but we can definitely speculate that given the chance it’s very likely that Jason would be able to impress many with some more ritual chanting or a heavy metal tune.

Talent All Around

Jason’s love of music extends to other musical talents. He is a very capable guitar player and has even performed at SG Con. Beyond his musical capabilities, Jason has proven his talents in the modelling, acting and producing careers. He really is amazing all-around.
