In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, the city of Chicago was finally taking Arturo Morales to trial. Arturo was a big time drug lord. They had actually tried to try him before for his drug offences and he got off because he killed a witness. He was now on trial for murdering that witness.
Voight as well as his unit had found the body of Tom Villar as well as the murder weapon. The weapon had Arturo’s DNA all over it. There was also plenty of other evidence to convict Arturo of the crime and so Arturo did something stupid. He abducted the wife of one of the jurors in his current trial.
Voight came in to testify one day. He noticed that one of the jurors was acting nervously. It was like he had something to hide and so Voight looked into it. He followed the juror after trial that day.
He had Detective Upton come with him. They saw Christopher Eagan go home. Upton was supposed to go knock on his door with the claim there’s been a couple of break-ins lately. Only she saw blood outside of his house. The cops then dropped the subterfuge and they went to go knock on his door to ask him about the blood.
Christopher broke down within minutes. He said Arturo’s people abducted his wife. They were in bed when masked men broke into their house and they tased his wife Julia to get her to stop fighting. She fell.
She hit her head on the way down and that’s where the blood was from. They took his wife. These same people later called him to tell him to vote “Not Guilty” in Arturo’s trial or they were going to kill his wife. He’s been allowed to speak with her everyday. They claimed they’d send photos and he was waiting on that.
However, Christopher didn’t think he alone could stop Arturo from going to jail. He said the others will vote guilty and that his wife may still be killed in spite of his vote. Christopher was scared.
He was willing to do anything and so Voight promised he would get Julia back. Voight couldn’t go on the record with her disappearance because that would stop the trial. It would also sign off on them killing Julia if she was no longer useful. And so Voight chose to keep the investigation very in house with the only outlier being Platt.
He didn’t even tell Chapman about it. She was prosecutor against Arturo and she was the murder victim’s girlfriend. She wanted to send Arturo away for life more than anyone. She might risk Julia in the process and so Voight hadn’t told her about the kidnapping. He instead tracked down city cameras from that time at night.
He saw footage of the masked men putting Julia in a car. The man who did that had an emblem on his shirt. Torres’s cover was still good at this time. He was able to return to the gang dominated bar and he planted a listening device.
He was also in the building when someone showed with the same hoodie as the kidnapper. The guy was complaining to the person that was in charge. That would be, Edgar Ochoa. Ochoa took over from Arturo. He also has been the only one visiting Arturo in prison.
They must have planned the abduction then and so they kept an ear out for the listening device while also following one of the kidnappers. The kidnapper later died in a house with them right outside. It turns out he had approached a junkie who went to med school for a year because he said Julia needed medical treatment.
The other guy was so high that he thought this person was collecting on a thirty thousand dollar debt. He shot the kidnapper and the kidnapper died before he could say where Julia was. Then the listening device later picked up that Ochoa said let her die if it comes to it. The police grabbed up Ochoa.
They tried to get him to confess where Julia was. Only he wasn’t talking. He refused to turn against Arturo until they arrested his brother. His brother Felipe has cancer. Ochoa had him staying in one of his stash houses and so there were drugs found in this house.
Felipe was arrested for drug possession. He could die in prison and so Ochoa made a deal. He agreed to tell them where Julia was in exchange for his brother being allowed to walk. Felipe was never in the game. He wasn’t a danger to anyone and so Voight made that deal. He got Julia’s location. He raced over there.
He raced ahead of his team and he didn’t wait around for them. He went in on his own. He found some trouble. He knocked out one guy and killed the other. He also found Julia.
Julia was still bleeding out from that head wound. Voight called for an ambulance for her. He also gotten taken to task by his team for not waiting and by Chapman for not telling her everything. Chapman knew something was up when Arturo’s men started to die and/or disappear. She tried asking Voight about it.
He fobbed her off. He even ignored her phone calls. He went to the bathroom at the courthouse to wait for Christopher. Christopher later arrived and Voight then assured the other man that his wife was still alive. She was fighting in ICU.
And so Christopher returned to the jury room to change his vote. He voted guilty. Arturo was found guilty and he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. But Chapman hadn’t been happy with Voight actions. Chapman now felt complicit in what he did. And she didn’t like that feeling.
