The way Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union handled their daughter coming out as transgender has been one of the highlights of the year. After the athlete revealed what it was like at the beginning, Gabrielle has opened up on why Zaya Wade will always have their unwavering support.
The 12-year-old’s decision to live her true life inspired the married couple so much that they did research and even reached out to the cast of Pose for advice on being trans. Dwyane then announced on Ellen that Zaya would be going by she/her pronouns.
Although the news was controversial when it came to what the public eye thought, the parents stood strong in their daughter’s corner.
Union recently spoke with The View where she was interviewed by Meghan McCain.
Meghan asked about what advice she has for a parent going through the same thing.
‘To love your child, listen to your child, accept your child. reject the notion that your children are disposable if they are not little mini versions of you. And that creating more of you, in every kind of way, isn’t the solution to keeping them safe or paving the way for a happy life. Allowing them to be exactly who they are and loving them and supporting them and hopefully guiding them to be a loving, compassionate and open-minded global citizen should be the goal,’ the actress responded.
She went on to say: ‘We’ve just seen so many times people throw away their kids and it’s … I don’t even have a word to describe it. It’s bizarre, sad, pathetic, heartbreaking. We just want to remind people that loving your kid is actually an option. Loving them, accepting them, helping to guide them in a way that reminds them that they are heard and seen and loved exactly as they are.’

It’s great to see a celebrity speaking up to speak about something that may be considered taboo to others.
