Skip Holtz's coaching career

Skip Holtz started coaching as a graduate assistant for American football powerhouse the Florida Gators between 1987 and 1988. He had a swell time at FSU, learning under the great Bobby Bowden.

Holtz left after two years to become the wide receivers coach at Colorado State University under coach Earle Bruce. He didn't spend too much time in Colorado, though; after one season, he went back to Notre Dame to coach under his father, Lou Holtz.

Skip Holtz had a distinguished time at Notre Dame, starting as the school's wide receivers coach, and he occupied the position for two years. Following the departure of Notre Dame's offensive coordinator, he stepped up to occupy the role.

Skip became Notre Dame's offensive coordinator in 1992. He helped his father to the Cotton Bowl Classic twice, beating Texas A&M on both occasions. Skip had the third-best total offense in the NCAA during the 1992 football season.

Thanks to his remarkable showings as the offensive mastermind of Notre Dame, Holtz was offered the head coach gig at the Connecticut Huskies. He accepted the offer and took his first head coaching job on December 23, 1993.

He spent three years in the role before resigning in 1998 to join his father, who had recently accepted the head coach job at South Carolina. He took up various positions in South Carolina, including assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach.

He left South Carolina in 2004 to occupy the head coach role at East Carolina University. He spent four seasons in ECU, winning two CUSA championships. He left ECU in 2009 and coached in two more college football programs, namely South Florida and Louisiana Tech, before accepting his first professional football coaching gig at the Birmingham Stallions in 2022. He is the head coach/offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Stallions.

Skip Holtz is a winner, and his coaching accolades include but aren't limited to the 2022 USFL Championship, two C-USA Championships, two C-USA East Division titles, three C-USA West Division titles, the 1998 Atlantic 10 New England Division, and the 2016 C-USA Coach of the Year Award.
