Chicago’s founding member and saxophonist Walter Parazaider (born March 14, 1945) is best known for his work as a founding member and saxophonist for the band Chicago. In addition to playing the flute, he also plays other woodwind instruments in the band, such as the clarinet. At the age of nine, Parazaider started studying the clarinet with his father, who lives in Chicago, Illinois. As a youngster, his developing skill was being nurtured for a future as a professional orchestral musician, and he went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical clarinet playing from the University of Illinois at Chicago. When Parazaider heard the Beatles’ hit song “Got To Get You Into My Life,” he was immediately taken with the notion of starting his own rock ‘n’ roll band, complete with horns.
Early rehearsal sessions at Parazaider’s home featured guitarist Terry Kath and drummer Danny Seraphine, who were both pals of Parazaider’s throughout his adolescent years and later became colleagues. Another buddy who got involved was future Chicago producer James William Guercio, who was also a friend of the family. The band, initially known as The Big Thing, ultimately changed its name to Chicago with the inclusion of Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone, Robert Lamm on keyboards, and Peter Cetera on bass joined the lineup.
When it comes to music, Parazaider’s main job in the band has been to play saxophone, flute, and woodwinds on James Pankow’s horn arrangements, among other things. The creative contributions of Parazaider (“It Better End Soon: 2nd Movement”, “Free Country”, “Aire”, “Devil’s Sweet” & “Window Dreamin'”) have been minimal in comparison to the other members (“It Better End Soon: 2nd Movement”, “Free Country”, “Aire”, “Devil’s Sweet” & “Window Dreamin'”). On “Colour My World,” Parazaider provides a very recognised flute solo that became a favourite “slow-dance” tune at high school proms in the late-1970s. Parazaider is also a member of the band Chicago. In 2008, DePaul University conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (Doctor of Humane Letters).
