The heat has returned. It has returned with a vengeance. I step outside my door and immediately regret it, calling for my wife to come mop my melted body up off the ground. In the words of the great composer and lyricist Cole Porter, “It’s too darn hot.”So, with that in mind there’s only one thing to do: eat all the frozen treats. Ice cream, ice pops, slushies, milkshakes, floats, sundaes, shaved ice. I want to eat them all. From now until the fall, I would like to live in a walk-in freezer. If you step into your local grocery store and find me camped out in the frozen food section, just let me be. I’m not hurting anyone…assuming you don’t try to get between me and the frozen desserts.
Since I’m sitting here waxing poetic about frozen deliciousness, why don’t we take a tour of my favorite frozen snacks in Walt Disney World. I’ll list these in no particular order. Don’t ask me to pick a favorite (Dole Whip). It just isn’t fair.
Let’s start with the Magic Kingdom. It has two of my favorite frozen snacks in all of Walt Disney World.
The first is Dole Whip. I’m trying to think of how to describe a Dole Whip to those who have never had one. I don’t want to be accused of exaggeration, so let me just say that Dole Whip is what heaven tastes like. It’s pure, frozen perfection. Ok, ok. Maybe you want a slightly less abstract or poetical description. At its most basic, a Dole Whip is pineapple soft serve. However, that doesn’t do justice to the experience.
There are a handful of places to get Dole Whip at Walt Disney World. If you’re visiting Disney Springs, it can be found at the Marketplace Snacks booth. It’s available at the Pineapple Lanai window at Disney’s Polynesian Resort and at BoardWalk Joe’s Marvelous Margaritas at Disney’s Boardwalk. Inside the parks, you can purchase a Dole Whip at Tamu Tamu Refreshments in Animal Kingdom. It also occasionally makes an appearance at food booths during festivals in Epcot. However, for my money, the ideal place to buy a Dole Whip is at Aloha Isle in the Magic Kingdom. It’s even better if you can get one immediately after visiting Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. If you’re travelling with a group, make sure to get more than one. You won’t want to share.
Not far from Aloha Isle, you can find another one of my favorite frozen snacks. Stop by Sunshine Tree Terrace to say hello to Orange Bird, and while you’re there, make sure to get a Citrus Swirl. It tastes a bit like frozen orange juice blended with vanilla soft serve. It’s sweet and tart and wonderful.
Leaving the Magic Kingdom, I think we’ll next venture over to Epcot. That’s usually the second park our family visits when we travel to Walt Disney World. To find our favorite frozen snack at Epcot, you’ll have to venture to the Japan Pavilion in the World Showcase. The Kabuki Cafe serves kakigōri, which is Japanese shaved ice. Your flavor options include Rainbow, Strawberry, Melon, Cherry, Tangerine or Blue Raspberry. If you’re curious (like I was) about what rainbow flavor is, it is simply a mix of all the other syrups. For an extra special experience, have them add condensed milk.
My favorite frozen treat in Hollywood Studios is a relatively new snack: the green or blue milk at Galaxy’s Edge. They are available at the Milk Stand and I’d be hard pressed to say which I prefer. Blue Milk is a blend of dragon fruit, pineapple, lime, and watermelon. Green Milk is mandarin orange, passion fruit, grapefruit, and orange blossom. They’re both incredibly refreshing and a perfect snack after engaging in a hair raising adventure on the Millenium Falcon in Smuggler’s Run.
Last, but certainly not least, is Animal Kingdom. To find my favorite snack, you’ll need to venture into the Valley of Mo’ara in Pandora – The World of Avatar. Once there, meander over to Pongu Pongu and order yourself a Night Blossom. The Night Blossom consists of layers of apple and desert pear limeade topped with passion fruit boba balls. While you’re at it, order a lumpia. No, it’s not a frozen treat. Just do it. You won’t regret it.
