According to a report from Just Jared, Sebastian Stan came out to defend Marvel following Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese’s comments regarding the comic book cinematic universe. During a panel this Sunday afternoon at the 2019 Fandemic Tour, the 37-year-old performer defended the genre of films after Francis Ford Coppola referred to them as “despicable.”
Through Comic Book, Sebastian shared that he was listening to Coppola and couldn’t help but think about the way in which people have thanked him for his performance in the movie. The star said people have been telling him, “this movie helped me so much.”
According to Sebastian, it’s not uncommon at all for people to come up to him with stories of how the movie inspired them to make a change or feel less alone. As it was briefly noted above, Martin Scorsese also slammed the MCU in an interview with Empire Magazine.
The Irishman filmmaker claimed he tried watching a comic book movie before, but he couldn’t do it, because he felt as though the films failed to communicate the experience of one human to another. Martin insinuated the films were lacking in human quality, as well as lacking in the ability to convey an experience.

When asked by reporters what he thought of Martin’s comments, Mr. Coppola agreed that Scorsese was 100% right, because the idea of cinema was to walk away from a film and have gained something, either inspiration, knowledge, or enlightenment.
As it was previously reported, Sebastian Stan wasn’t the only MCU actor to slam Coppola and Scorsese’s comments regarding the uncinematic quality of them. Some of the biggest names in the industry criticized Martin’s choice of words, including James Gunn, Joss Whedon, as well as Natalie Portman.

Earlier this weekend, for instance, Natalie Portman came out to say there wasn’t just one way of creating art. There are a plethora of ways of going about communicating an experience to another.
